Some pictures from Drew tonight of some locos that tend to get neglected by modelers simply because they run across the center of the NIMT, which the S scale guys don't seem to model (as they don't have very large basements). The Ef class just seem to run and don't spend time at Hutt shops being rebuilt. I assume they are reliable locos ( If anyone can prove me wrong), and it appears that the painting specialists are at work all over the country. This is an interesting look at what the Dl class will probably look like (with a narrow hood of course).
Also, A shot of the last surviving 'Bumblebee' Dx 5166, reputed to be next in line for the Hutt shops treatment.
Finally, if you park your ride outside at night in a rough area, don't be surprised if you find it the next morning up on blocks with the wheels pinched

I've always wondered why the EF's have never received the kudo's they deserve. They have to be one of the best serving locomotives on the New Zealand rail network. Makes me homesick for the central north island...
most are stationed at Palmerston North and Te Rapa, I saw a proposal of electricfing the ECMT to the Mount and Tauranga and using EF's on that line, but i'm guessing that with the new Dalians coming in next year that proposal has been canned.
Electrifying ECMT and Midland lines would make sense in the long run as they are both very high tonnage and would get rid of problems of tunnel gases.
The kaimai tunnel was built with clearances for future electification, so would be a great site to see lectric loco's in the BOP. I've been in the kaimai tunnel a few times after a train has entered - it takes quite a while for the draft to clean the yellow haze out.
ECMT maybe you should do a future ECMT incorporating EF's as the main stay :)
The Auckland Propsoal of using AC like the NIMT is a good choice, they may end up finishing the Hamilton to Auckland Electrification first, before they decide to do anythng else.
Nice idea RKBL ! Kaimai tunnel east portal to Apata loop is a nice piece of line, but modelling catenary doesn't thrill me. The Kato EF200 is supposedly ok for an Ef chassis.
I suppose the decision for the ECMT was electrify or wait for the Dl's to arrive.
With the electrification of auckland they might as well continue it to hamilton I reckon. its not far and would allow the 2 systems to be linked. Even better convert wellington to 25kV and electrify to palmerston north. Wellington to Auckland purely by electric :) what a great dream.
for some reason Wellington seems to like the DC system for there electrification, they are also extending that same system up to waikanae, so I cannot see wellington ever having an AC electrification
